AGS & Venus Mines
Sites Remediation
Where are the mines located?
Arctic Gold and Silver (AGS) seated on Montana Mountain, C/TFN sacred Territory.
Venus is located on Windy Arm Lake shore, about 15min from Carcross toward Skagway.
Both sites are fenced for your safety - DO NOT TRESPASS!
What has happened?
Both sites have been mined for gold, silver and other metals, between the early 1800 until mid-1900, leaving behind “tailings” – ground or crushed rock that can change metals concentrations in the surrounding groundwater. Metals in groundwater can move into the surrounding lakes and plants, and can be found in animals using the sites.
Why is it important to clean it up?
AGS and Venus are both historical breadbasket areas for C/TFN Citizens, it is time to clean them for our future generations.
Who is doing the work?
HCLP is managing the project(s), with funding from CIRNAC and with the support of CTLP crew.
HCLP has also hired subconsultants to support the project.
What are we doing?
-
CTEC has been awarded the yearly sites monitoring and surveillance by CIRNAC.
HCLP team is visiting the sites every month to insure that there is no natural or human disturbance, and is sampling water 8 times a year to monitor the contamination levels.
-
Public consultations have been conducted at the fall 2023, to get input from the community toward the remediation closure objectives.
We have asked the community how they would like to be able to use both sites after remediation.
-
We are currently working with WSP (Engineering firm) to identify options for closure and select the best one.
HCLP is working with WSP engineers to embed the community wishes within the technical requirements toward the next steps.
Next steps - What needs to be done?
-
HCLP will be leading the conceptual design phase.
HCLP will be hiring the engineering firm that will provide the design for the seleted closure option.
-
Closure Options Community Engagement
The closure options with their pros and cons will be presented to the community.
-
Closure option development
The chosen engineering firm will develop and prepare the closure plan for the next step: actual groundwork clean up!
-
Ground work

C/TFN Book 1 - Tlingit
We who are Tagish and we who are Tlingit,
our heritage has grown roots into the earth since the olden times.
Therefore we are part of the earth and the water.
We know our creator entrusted us with the responsibility of looking after the land into perpetuity, and the water, and whatever is on our land, and what is beneath our land.
